It was in the late 1960s and 70s that Indian filmmakers began using foreign locations in their films, especially the integral song sequences which were required to be visually stunning. Till today, the snow-capped Swiss Alps and lush green fields remain the favourite destinations for Bollywood’s enigmatic creations. He is also the driver of YRF’s foray into the modern world of corporatized entertainment, and the Head of all the Studio’s activities. Since its inception in1970, Yash Raj Films has occupied pole position as the country’s most powerful entertainment brand. The essence of the prestige, power and glamour that is associated with the history of YRF is its reputed catalogue of films. And beneath a large number of these films lies an underlying commonality and thread – a distinct linkage to the country of Switzerland. The pioneering effort to take Indian films to foreign landscapes was made by Yashji, who without doubt is regarded as the champion of integrating Indian films with Swiss backdrops, even till this day.
<a10:updated>2010-01-05T16:12:19+01:00</a10:updated>

SOTC Tours to Europe Page 8

On his honeymoon in the early-1970’s, Yashji visited Switzerland and fell in love with the country’s overwhelming beauty. It was then that he decided that he would shoot at least one romantic song there in every future film of his, and over the last 4 decades, he has shot 12 of his films there. A large number of these films have gone on to become blockbusters, and are, even today, watched with incredible zeal and enthusiasm by fans worldwide. As such, YRF films have become almost like a marketing tool for Switzerland and its tourism industry. The country became the hottest tourist spot in the 1990’s for Indians living both in India and abroad, as well the non-Indian consumer who was slowly beginning to watch YRF films across the globe. The Swiss government welcomed Yashji with open arms, and later went on to honour him for helping audiences ‘discover Switzerland’ through his eyes as a filmmaker. For this, Yashji was presented a special award from Ursula Andress on behalf of the government to highlight his achievement in this regard. In fact, Yashji directed his most recent film, Veer Zaara, in 2004, and even though the script did not naturally provide for it, he created a dream sequence just so that he could shoot a song in Switzerland. A lake in Switzerland has also been unofficially named the “Chopra Lake” because of the manner in which Yashji has portrayed it in a number of his well-known movies. Aditya Chopra too, in his directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, shot significant portions of the film in Switzerland. This film went on to become the biggest blockbuster in Indian film history, and is still running in India today, in its 15th year since release in 1995.
